Tiukula House

2003-2005 | Helsinki

In the Tiukula project (2003–2005), Arkki teaching groups and local children and youth participated in designing the headquarters of the Save the Children organization in Käpylä. The project involved designing floor and wall mosaics and wall paintings.

Through free association and storytelling, the children and youth chose the theme of marine life for the building and explored it, for example, during a sketching excursion to the Sea Life public aquarium. During the school year, Arkki student groups developed mosaics for the building’s main hall and separate paintings for the building’s corridors.

Children and youth were able to follow the construction of Tiukula. They met architects and participated in key phases of construction, from laying the foundation stone to completing the floor mosaic. They also painted the construction site fence. The building’s inauguration included participation with the President of the Republic.
