The curriculum of the Arkki School of Architecture for Children and Youth is based on the national curriculum guidelines for basic art education prepared by the Finnish National Agency for Education.
On September 20, 2017, the Finnish National Agency for Education decided on the curriculum guidelines for the broad and general syllabuses of basic art education for the following art fields: architecture, visual arts, crafts, media arts, music, literary arts, circus arts, dance, and theater arts. Pupils who began their basic art education studies after July 31, 2018, study according to a curriculum prepared in accordance with these guidelines. The architecture education in Arkki, based on the broad syllabus of basic art education, follows the Act (633/1998) and Decree (813/1998) on Basic Education in the Arts.
In Arkki, the core contents of the education include building art, urban planning, community planning, environmental planning, spatial design, landscape design, and spatial and environmental art. The construction of the environment as a cultural and social activity is treated in an experiential and multi-sensory manner. The studies guide pupils to analyze, evaluate, and interpret their environment. Most of the study assignments involve open-ended problems that pupils are encouraged to solve from their own perspectives. The motto of the school-specific curriculum is: “Play, Create, and Succeed!” This principle is applied in the education of all age groups.
