The Curious Class Project
2018-2021 | Helsinki
In the fall semester of 2018, Arkki and the Finnish-language 4th grades at Taivallahti Primary School launched the Utelias luokka (Curious Class) pilot project, supported by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. During the project, new ways of collaborating with an external architecture professional were explored, integrating the content of school subjects into more hands-on design tasks rather than traditional classroom activities. The project utilized the Creative Partnerships model, where the sessions were planned and implemented collaboratively by class teachers and an architecture educator.
From the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years, the Curious Class project was carried out weekly with 4th and 5th graders at Taivallahti Primary School until the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the activities. In September 2021, the remaining educational units were completed during intensive days at Arkki’s premises in the Cable Factory with the then 4th and 5th graders from Taivallahti.
Based on the interviews and observational data collected during the project, a project report was created, compiling the experiences of the project as well as a comprehensive workbook section. The workbook breaks down the projects and tasks completed during the project into practical task pages, which can be used for planning and implementing education.
The project was supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
