Involved in Malmi – High School Students’ Photography Workshops

2023 | Helsinki

In the spring of 2023, students from Helsinki Media High School explored Malmi’s city center using the photovoice method during workshops. Photovoice involves participants taking photographs, which are then used to collaboratively create narratives and knowledge. Through this method, Malmi high school students were able to share their observations about their neighborhood and suggest ideas for its improvement.

The students reflected on what has changed in Malmi, both positively and negatively. The newly renovated shopping center and the Malmi bus terminal tower received praise, while Ylä-Malmi Square and the “Malmi Tunnel” were noted as areas needing improvement. The students also discussed the importance of maintaining proportionality in the height of buildings.

Parks, libraries, and cafés were identified as spaces that would be suitable and beneficial for young people, with a desire expressed for more of these places. Key elements considered significant included the shopping center, transportation hubs, and small retail shops. The students highlighted beautiful parks and a vibrant cultural scene as features of Malmi that may not be widely recognized.

They also sought out “reflections,” or places that encapsulate something essential about Malmi and its transformation. Examples included the contrast between large, new apartment buildings and old single-family homes behind them, as well as parks and other public spaces where the students saw potential for development and new ideas.
